Study for a Semester or a Year in Taiwan!

Institution
When Soochow University was founded in 1900, it became the first private university in Taiwan. Today, it is recognized as one of the most prestigious private universities on the island, composed of 6 colleges, 23 departments, and a student population of over 15,000. Soochow has received the China’s Ministry of Education's "Teaching Excellence Program" every year since 2005 and has a variety of modern academic facilities. The university’s motto “Unto a Full Grown Man” emphasizes its commitment to the personal and professional development of its students. This globally-focused and innovation-minded university welcomes a diverse international population every year.
Location
Soochow University is in the heart of Taiwan – a nation situated on an island off the coast of China. Amidst the busy, urban capital city of Taipei (with a population of 2.7 million people), the Soochow campus is surrounded by lush green hills and a clear stream, creating a unique and enriching environment to live and learn in Taiwan. Transportation between the Soochow campuses is convenient and the university is located next to one of Taiwan’s top tourist destinations: The National Palace Museum. Taipei is a thriving city connected to its history and connected to the world. Travelers enjoy visiting sacred and religious sites/displays, a stunning natural landscape, and diverse cuisine drawing inspiration for all over Asia. Exchange students are sure to acquire a dynamic cultural immersion experience in Taiwan.

Housing
Student housing of Soochow University provides exchange students with a way to connect with their international community while experiencing life as a college student in Taiwan. There are 6 dormitories total and 1 special cottage for exchange students, fully furnished. NWU students pay approximately $330/month.

Students pay housing costs directly to Soochow University.

Academics
Exchange students at Soochow may register for classes in the Social Sciences, Foreign Languages, Natural Sciences, Law, and Business. Students enroll for classes using an online application on the university website before a predetermined deadline. At least one elective must be selected and no modifications can be made after submission.

Chinese language requirements
A language course is required, but students do not need to have prior Chinese language knowledge to attend Soochow.
Outside the Classroom
There are 163 student clubs in Soochow University that are categorized into six activity varieties: Public Affairs, Arts, Academics, Sports, Social Services, and Relationships. Also, a club composed of Taiwanese students from the University of Soochow called the “Soochow University Students’ International Service” serves as a resource for international students, aiding them in cultural adjustment and collaboration with the Soochow community. Further, cultural exchange events are offered such as the “International Food Festival” and the “Shuangxi Boat and Rowing Event.” Students are also encouraged to participate in the service learning programs Soochow offers each semester.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and some programs may fill up before the listed deadline.  Each year applications for Fall, Spring, and Summer will open up on August 1st.  After opening, the deadline will be listed below and an Apply Now button will be available at the top and bottom of this page.  The Soochow application has a 2-part application process so students are encouraged to complete their NWU application well before the listed deadline.
